LMIT Grant: Experience

Mid Grant Technical Review

The Mid-Grant Technical Review, hosted by Lemelson MIT, was attended by over 100 with the purpose of covering key aspects of the device such as financial, community outreach, sustainability, and technical. Through the means of the event, and with the help of ASL interpreters, the QLS InvenTeam gained important feedback from potential users and partners. 91.7% of survey respondents applauded the team's efforts and reported it was easy to follow the presentation.

EurekaFest 2021

The EurekaFest was an event wrap-up of the our 2020-21 Lemelson-MIT grant journey. We wrapped up by recapping our intent and goal at the start, providing a real-life video demonstration of our device, sharing the next steps and answering any final questions. We are so incredibly grateful to MIT for the opportunity and cannot wait to continue with our project.

InvenTeams Grant Application

Documentation on submissions to Lemelson-MIT during the application process.

Background Research Summary

"Beyond tinkering in the workshop, the Quarry Lane School’s InvenTeam members are passionate and experienced in competitive sports. Quite often, after the referee’s whistle was blown, the opposing players would carry on to finish a layup or complete a play, unable to hear the signal."

Invention Statement

"Imagine playing a game of basketball, the agile scuffling of shoes against the maple wood floor, the shrill command of the referee’s whistle, and the impassioned exclamations from the opposing coach as the scoreboard tips out of their favor. Now imagine the game with the scuffling, screeching, and the coach’s commands on mute."

Preparing for Remote Inventing and Rapid Closure

"The Quarry Lane School has implemented distance learning since mid-March, and will continue for the foreseeable future. Having experienced learning, communicating, and working remotely, the team has adapted and worked out InvenTeam conventions and duties."

Project Organization, Team Roster, Collaborations, and Timeline

"The team is divided into three sub teams: research, outreach, and design. Additionally, every member is responsible for contributing and coordinating between the groups ... Through many layers of discussions and meetings, the project will be well thought out and progress effectively."

Community Engagement through Elected Officials

As we aspire to support the deaf community, amplifying and hearing their voices and needs is a must. Connecting with partners, such as Deaf Camp Pacifica, has provided great insight in crafting the device.

Budget

An in-depth breakdown of the expenses and costs of the device and additional components. The $10,000 grant shall be spent close to the specifications on the budget to effectively utilize provided resources.
